A KTU Low Pass Grade (LP) is a grade you request, not one you are given automatically. It carries a grade point of 4.0 and exists for a specific situation: you scored at least 40% in the End Semester Examination but did not reach the overall pass threshold for the course because your Continuous Internal Assessment marks were too low.
It was introduced by University Order No. 259/2024/KTU, with the portal opening for requests on 8 July 2024. Because it postdates the 2022 Academic Manual, it does not appear in that document at all.
Which schemes are eligible
This is the part most often got wrong. The University Order names six programmes and schemes:
- B.Tech 2015 Scheme
- B.Tech 2019 Scheme
- B.Arch 2016 Scheme
- B.Arch 2021 Scheme
- B.Tech (Part-Time) 2016 Scheme
- B.Tech (Part-Time) 2020 Scheme
The 2024 scheme is not on the list. The order was issued in 2024, which is where the confusion comes from, but a 2024-scheme student cannot request an LP grade.
The two limits
| Rule | Limit |
|---|---|
| Maximum subjects across the entire course | 10 |
| Chances to improve an LP grade | One, at the immediate subsequent opportunity |
The cap of 10 runs for the whole duration of your programme, not per semester or per year. Once you have used all ten, no further LP requests are possible however eligible you are.
How to apply
- Log in to the KTU student portal with your credentials.
- Go to the Result section and open Request Low Pass Grade.
- Click Check Low-Pass Grade Eligibility. Eligible courses appear on the Add Low Pass Grade Request page.
- Review each course. The list shows the semester, course, exam, result published date, the final date for submission, and the available action.
- Tick the checkbox against every course you want the LP grade for.
- Click Save, then click Submit. Saving alone does not lodge the request.
The University then processes the request and republishes your result with the LP grade against the selected courses.
What this means in practice
An LP grade converts a fail into a pass, but at 4.0 points it is well below every other pass grade β under the 2019 scheme, P is 5.5 and D is 6.0. Taking it will pull your CGPA down relative to clearing the course properly, so the trade-off is a lower CGPA against not carrying the subject forward.
That is what the single improvement chance is for. If you take the LP and then clear the course at the immediate subsequent opportunity, you replace the 4.0 with whatever you actually earn. Waiting past that chance makes the 4.0 permanent.
The deadline shown against each course in the portal is per course and tied to when that result was published, so eligible courses can expire at different times. Check the Final Date for Submission column rather than assuming one deadline covers everything.
