KTU internal marks calculation is easier to follow with actual numbers than with percentages, because the percentages in the regulation are shares of a CIE total that itself differs by scheme. 2019 scheme: a 50-mark CIE
A theory course is CIE : ESE = 1 : 2, so CIE is 50 marks against a 100-mark end semester examination. The regulation fixes the split at 20% attendance, 50% tests, 30% assignment or class work:

Worked example
Say you have 82% attendance, scored 34 and 41 out of 50 in the two internal tests, and were given 13 out of 15 for assignments.
- Attendance: full marks need 90%. At 82% the reduction is proportional, so 82/90 Γ 10 = 9.1
- Tests: the two tests average (34 + 41) Γ· 2 = 37.5 out of 50, scaled to the 25-mark component = 18.75
- Assignment: 13
- CIE total: 40.86 out of 50
Then check the normalisation cap
Under the 2019 scheme your CIE percentage cannot exceed your ESE percentage by more than 30 points. Here CIE is 81.7%. If you then score 45% in the end semester examination, your maximum eligible CIE is 45 + 30 = 75%, and your 81.7% is normalised down to 75%, or 37.5 marks. Score 60% in the exam and the cap is 90%, so nothing is trimmed.
This catches people out: a strong internal mark does not survive a weak exam.
2024 scheme: a 40-mark CIE
A theory course is CIE : ESE = 2 : 3, so CIE is 40 marks against a 60-mark examination. Two things differ beyond the total.
Attendance is banded, not proportional
The bands run 4, 3, 2, 1, 0 below the 85% threshold, which describes a 5-mark attendance component:

The same 82% attendance that earned 9.1 of 10 under the 2019 scheme earns a flat 4 of 5 here. There is no partial credit within a band β 80.1% and 84.9% score identically, and slipping from 85% to 84.9% costs a full mark.
The rest of the split comes from your syllabus
The 2024 regulation does not fix how the remaining 35 marks divide. R7.5 lists what CIE may draw on β day-to-day work, periodic tests, assignments, case studies, activities, micro projects, mini projects, MCQs, quizzes β and states that the evaluation pattern and weightage are detailed in the syllabus of each course.
So the calculation is: 5 marks attendance + 35 marks distributed exactly as your course syllabus specifies. Anyone quoting a universal 20/50/30 split for the 2024 scheme is repeating the 2019 rule.
And there is no cap to apply
The +30 point normalisation clause does not appear in the 2024 regulation’s assessment chapter, so a 2024 CIE mark is not trimmed against your exam performance the way a 2019 one is.
Checking your own mark
- Find your CIE total β it must be displayed on the department notice board for two working days before it goes to the portal.
- Work out the attendance component first; it is the one part fixed by regulation in both schemes.
- For the rest, use the 20/50/30 split if you are on 2019, or your course syllabus if you are on 2024.
- If the arithmetic does not reconcile, raise it in writing β under the 2024 scheme, to the course faculty and your Senior Faculty Advisor within two days of publication.
There is no route to improve CIE marks afterwards under either scheme, so the objection window is the only opportunity to correct an error.
