Internship is part of the mandatory credit structure in the KTU B.Tech 2019 scheme, but an industrial visit is not mentioned anywhere in the Academic Manual. The two are often spoken about together in colleges, and they do not have the same standing in the regulations.
Internship appears under R3.7 of the B.Tech 2019 Regulation, inside the PROJ course category. Industrial visits, study tours and field visits have no clause, no credit allotment and no assessment scheme in the manual.
Where internship sits in the 2019 credit structure
The curriculum has nine course categories totalling 162 credits. Internship is not a standalone category — it shares one with project work and seminar.

Two details are worth reading closely. The category says “internship in industry or elsewhere” — the regulation does not require the internship to be in a company. And the 10 credits are shared across project work, seminar and internship together, so the manual does not fix a separate credit weight for internship on its own.
How those 10 credits are split, and what the internship component actually looks like, is set by your branch curriculum and syllabus rather than by the Academic Manual. That is where you check for the exact requirement.
The 2015 scheme had no internship line at all
The 2015 Regulation’s credit structure lists Seminar (2), Comprehensive Viva (2), Design Project (2) and Project (6) as separate entries. There is no internship item in that table. Internship as a named part of the curriculum arrived with the 2019 scheme.
Industrial visits are not in the regulations
Searching the Academic Manual for industrial visits, industry visits, field visits or study tours returns nothing for B.Tech. There is no clause making them mandatory, no credit for them, and no attendance or assessment rule attached to them.
That does not mean your college cannot organise one or expect you to attend. It means the requirement, if there is one, comes from your institution or your department, not from the University regulations. If a college treats an industrial visit as compulsory, ask which departmental or curriculum requirement it maps to.
The one place industrial training appears as a hard requirement is the BHMCT programme, which has a 20-week industrial training in Semester VI under its own rule RU-6. That is a different programme and does not apply to B.Tech.
Self-initiated summer internships earn activity points
Separately from the curriculum, students can arrange their own internships during summer breaks and claim activity points for them. The B.Arch regulation states this explicitly and sets a minimum duration of 15 working days under a designer or institute with more than five years of standing, approved by the institution.
For B.Tech, self-arranged internships fall under the Self-Initiatives and Entrepreneurship categories of the activity points scheme. This route is optional — but since 100 activity points are mandatory for the degree anyway, a summer internship is one of the more useful ways to accumulate them.
Break of study for internship leading to employment
There is one further internship provision, and it is a strict one. Under R7.1(iv), a student may take break of study for an “internship leading to employment” — but only under these conditions:
- You must produce the offer letter from the employer.
- The Principal verifies the offer’s authenticity and forwards a recommendation to the University well in advance.
- Only campus placed students with an annual compensation above ₹6 lakh are eligible.
- The University must approve it; the Principal cannot grant it alone.
The regulation also notes that break of study for a full academic year is preferred over a single semester, given the University’s semester system.
What this means in practice
Treat these as three separate things. The curriculum internship inside PROJ is mandatory in the sense that the 10 credits are mandatory — check your branch syllabus for how your department has structured it. Activity point internships are optional but count towards a requirement you have to meet regardless. And break of study for internship is a narrow provision that applies to a small number of high-package campus placements.
The industrial visit belongs to none of these categories. If it is being presented to you as a University requirement, it is not one under this manual.
