About Engineering Ethics and Sustainable Development (UCHUT347)

Engineering Ethics and Sustainable Development (UCHUT347) is a 2-credit course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme, common to all branches and taught in semester 3 or 4, depending on the college. It covers how engineers should make ethical, responsible decisions at work, and how engineering can protect the environment and support sustainable development, with examples from Kerala and India.

Syllabus

  • Module 1: Fundamentals of engineering ethics: professionalism, integrity, plagiarism, data and cybersecurity, confidentiality and codes of ethics, plus basic concepts in gender studies and gender equity.
  • Module 2: Environmental ethics, sustainable engineering principles and life cycle analysis, ecosystems and biodiversity, and sustainable urban planning.
  • Module 3: Water management, zero waste and recycling, the circular economy, and sustainable transport and e-mobility.
  • Module 4: Renewable energy, climate change and engineering solutions, environmental policies and regulations, and real-world case studies.

Exam pattern

The course is assessed out of 100 marks: 50 marks from internal assessment and 50 marks from the end-semester exam. Internal marks come from a portfolio of work built up over the semester: a weekly reflective journal, group micro-projects such as an ethics case study, activities from each module, and a final presentation.

Study tips

Keep your reflective journal up to date every week rather than writing it at the end. For the written exam, learn the key concepts and definitions in each module and support your answers with real examples, especially local ones from Kerala. Solving previous question papers helps you see how questions are framed.
