About Physics For Information Science (GAPHT121)
Physics for Information Science (GAPHT121) is a first-year course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme, common to Group A branches such as CSE, IT and AI & DS. It's taken in semester 1 or 2 and combines theory with a physics lab. The course explains the physics behind computer hardware: how electrons behave in solids and how semiconductor devices work.
Syllabus
- Module 1: Electrical conductivity, energy bands and superconductivity.
- Module 2: Quantum mechanics, including the uncertainty principle, the SchrΓΆdinger equation and the particle in a box.
- Module 3: Semiconductor physics and the p-n junction.
- Module 4: Semiconductor devices: rectifiers, Zener diodes, lasers, solar cells and LEDs.
Exam pattern
The end-semester exam is for 60 marks: 8 short questions of 3 marks each, plus 4 questions of 9 marks each, one from each module. Internal assessment, including the lab, adds 40 marks.
Study tips
Practise the key derivations and diagrams, and solve previous question papers to spot repeated topics.
