About Physics For Electrical Science (GBPHT121)
Physics for Electrical Science (GBPHT121) is a first-year course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme, common to Group B branches such as ECE, EEE and EI. It's taken in semester 1 or 2 and combines theory with a physics lab. The course covers the physics behind electronic and electrical devices, from semiconductors to lasers and optical fibres.
Syllabus
- Module 1: Semiconductor physics: carrier concentration, the p-n junction, and the diode equation.
- Module 2: Semiconductor devices: rectifiers, Zener and tunnel diodes, photodiodes, solar cells and LEDs.
- Module 3: Superconductivity and dielectrics, including the Meissner effect, types of polarization and the Clausius-Mossotti relation.
- Module 4: Lasers and fibre optics: population inversion, the ruby and semiconductor lasers, numerical aperture, and fibre optic communication.
Exam pattern
The end-semester exam is for 60 marks: 8 short questions of 3 marks each, plus 4 questions of 9 marks each, one from each module. Internal assessment, including the lab, adds 40 marks.
Study tips
Practise the key derivations, such as carrier concentration, the diode equation, the Clausius-Mossotti relation and numerical aperture. Learn to draw energy band diagrams and V-I curves neatly, and solve previous question papers to spot repeated topics.
