About DC Machines & Transformers (PCEET303)
DC Machines & Transformers (PCEET303) is a third-semester course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme for Electrical and Electronics Engineering. It covers how DC generators, DC motors and transformers are built, how they work, and how their performance is tested and analysed, the core machines behind power generation, industrial drives and electricity distribution.
Syllabus
- Module 1: Construction of DC machines and armature windings (lap and wave), the DC generator and its EMF equation, shunt generator characteristics (critical field resistance and voltage build-up), armature reaction, compensating windings, interpoles and commutation.
- Module 2: DC motors: back EMF and torque, characteristics of different motor types, starting, speed control, losses, efficiency and testing.
- Module 3: Single-phase transformers: construction, EMF equation, equivalent circuit and phasor diagrams, open and short circuit tests, voltage regulation and efficiency.
- Module 4: Three-phase transformers: construction, connections and operation.
Exam pattern
The end-semester exam is for 60 marks: 8 short questions of 3 marks each, plus 4 questions of 9 marks each, one from each module. Internal assessment adds 40 marks.
Study tips
Practise the numerical problems in every module, such as EMF and torque equations, generator and motor characteristics, transformer regulation and efficiency. Learn to draw machine construction diagrams, characteristic curves, equivalent circuits and phasor diagrams neatly, and solve previous question papers to spot repeated problem types.
