About Circuits & Networks (PCEET302)
Circuits & Networks (PCEET302) is a third-semester course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme for Electrical and Electronics Engineering. It teaches systematic methods for analysing electric circuits: network theorems for DC and AC circuits, resonance, three-phase networks, transient response using Laplace transforms, coupled circuits and two-port networks. It's the foundation for later subjects like electrical machines, power systems and control systems.
Syllabus
- Module 1: Network theorems (superposition, Thevenin, Norton, maximum power transfer and reciprocity) applied to DC and AC circuits.
- Module 2: Three-phase networks in star and delta, balanced and unbalanced loads, complex power (active, reactive and apparent), and series and parallel resonance.
- Module 3: Transient response of RL, RC and RLC circuits, the time constant, and solving circuits with Laplace transforms using transformed circuits in the s-domain.
- Module 4: Two-port networks (Z, Y, h and T parameters, symmetry and reciprocity, and series, parallel and cascade interconnection) and coupled circuits.
Exam pattern
The end-semester exam is for 60 marks: 8 short questions of 3 marks each, plus 4 questions of 9 marks each, one from each module. Internal assessment adds 40 marks.
Study tips
This subject is mostly numerical problems, so practise regularly: network theorem problems, three-phase power calculations, transient analysis using Laplace transforms, and finding two-port parameters. Draw each circuit clearly and solve step by step, and work through previous question papers to see which problem types repeat.
