About Analog Circuits (PCECT303)

Analog Circuits (PCECT303) is a third-semester course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme for Electronics and Communication Engineering. It teaches how to analyse and design the basic analog building blocks found in every electronic system: wave-shaping circuits, transistor amplifiers, feedback amplifiers, oscillators, power amplifiers and voltage regulators.

Syllabus

  • Module 1: Wave-shaping circuits (RC differentiator and integrator, RC low-pass and high-pass filters, diode clipping and clamping) and biasing of BJTs and MOSFETs.
  • Module 2: BJT and MOSFET amplifiers: the RC-coupled CE amplifier, small-signal analysis with the hybrid-π model, high-frequency response and the Miller effect, the CS amplifier, and multistage and cascode amplifiers.
  • Module 3: Feedback amplifiers and the four feedback topologies, and oscillators: Wien bridge, Hartley and crystal.
  • Module 4: Power amplifiers (class A, B, AB, C and D) and linear voltage regulators, including series and shunt regulators and protection circuits.

Exam pattern

The end-semester exam is for 60 marks: 8 short questions of 3 marks each, plus 4 questions of 9 marks each, one from each module. Internal assessment adds 40 marks.

Study tips

Practise biasing and amplifier design problems step by step, and learn to draw small-signal equivalent circuits quickly, since they're the basis of most long questions. Learn the circuit diagrams and output waveforms for clippers, clampers, oscillators and power amplifiers, and solve previous question papers to spot repeated design problems.
