About Structural Analysis I (PCCET303)
Structural Analysis โ I (PCCET303) is a third-semester course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme for Civil Engineering. It teaches how to find the forces in trusses and the deflections of beams and frames, and introduces the analysis of statically indeterminate structures. It's the foundation for Structural Analysis โ II and for designing concrete and steel structures.
Syllabus
- Module 1: Statically determinate trusses using the method of joints and the method of sections, and beam deflections by the moment area method (Mohr's theorems).
- Module 2: Beam deflections by the conjugate beam method, and deflections of beams, frames and trusses.
- Module 3: Introduction to the force method and analysis of statically indeterminate structures by the method of consistent deformations.
- Module 4: Further methods for statically indeterminate beams, frames and trusses.
Exam pattern
The end-semester exam is for 60 marks: 8 short questions of 3 marks each, plus 4 questions of 9 marks each, one from each module. Internal assessment adds 40 marks.
Study tips
This subject is almost entirely numerical, so practise a few problems every week. Draw clear free-body and bending moment diagrams before every problem, learn the sign conventions for each method, and solve previous question papers to see which structures and loadings are asked most often.
