About Fluid Mechanics (PCCET302)
Fluid Mechanics (PCCET302) is a third-semester course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme for Civil Engineering. It carries 4 credits (L:T:P:R = 3:1:0:0), and the prerequisite is Engineering Mechanics (GCEST103). The course introduces the fundamental concepts of fluid mechanics and hydraulics in pipes and open channels, including pressure measurement and flow measurement systems.
Syllabus
- Module 1: Fluid properties, Newton's law of viscosity, types of fluids, fluid pressure, Pascal's law, hydrostatic law, and pressure measurement using simple manometers (piezometer, U-tube) and differential manometers (U-tube and inverted U-tube), plus mechanical gauges.
- Module 2: Total pressure and centre of pressure on vertical, horizontal, inclined and curved surfaces, buoyancy and floatation (centre of buoyancy, metacentre, metacentric height, stability of floating and submerged bodies), dimensional analysis and hydraulic similitude (model analysis and types of similarities).
- Module 3: Fluid kinematics (Lagrangian and Eulerian methods, types of flow, continuity equation, velocity and acceleration, streamline, pathline and streakline, velocity potential, stream function, flow net) and fluid dynamics (Bernoulli's equation from Euler's equation, venturimeter, orifice meter, Pitot tube, momentum equation and forces on pipe bends).
- Module 4: Flow through orifices (hydraulic coefficients, large orifices, time of emptying a tank), pipe flow (Darcy-Weisbach equation, major and minor losses, hydraulic gradient line, total energy line, pipes in series and parallel), open channel flow, flow through notches and weirs, and a brief introduction to specific energy, gradually and rapidly varied flow, and hydraulic jump.
Exam pattern
The end-semester exam is for 60 marks and lasts 2 hours 30 minutes. Part A has 8 compulsory questions of 3 marks each (2 from each module, 24 marks). Part B has 2 questions from each module, of which you answer one, each carrying 9 marks (4 x 9 = 36 marks). Continuous internal evaluation (CIE) carries 40 marks: attendance (5), assignment or microproject (15) and three internal exams (5 + 10 + 5).
Study tips
Most questions in this subject are numerical, so practise problems regularly. Focus on manometer problems in Module 1, total pressure and centre of pressure in Module 2, continuity and Bernoulli's equation applications in Module 3, and pipe flow and notches and weirs in Module 4. Learn the derivations that the syllabus asks for, such as the continuity equation, Bernoulli's equation and the Darcy-Weisbach equation. Solve previous year question papers to see how questions are framed.
