About Analog Electronics (PBEET304)
Analog Electronics (PBEET304) is a third-semester course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme for Electrical and Electronics Engineering. It teaches how to design practical analog circuits using BJTs, FETs and operational amplifiers: amplifiers, oscillators, op-amp circuits and active filters. It's a project-based course, so students also build a working electronic hardware project to solve a real-world problem.
Syllabus
- Module 1: Review of BJTs, the common emitter amplifier, the emitter follower, and power amplifiers.
- Module 2: JFETs and MOSFETs, feedback, and oscillator circuits.
- Module 3: Operational amplifiers: differential amplifiers, op-amp specifications (gain, CMRR, slew rate), inverting, non-inverting, summing, difference and instrumentation amplifiers, differentiators and integrators, comparators and the Schmitt trigger.
- Module 4: Active filters and other op-amp application circuits.
Exam pattern
As a project-based course, internal assessment carries more weight: 60 marks, including the hardware project and two internal exams. The end-semester exam is for 40 marks.
Study tips
Practise amplifier and oscillator design problems step by step, and learn the standard op-amp circuits with their gain formulas, since they're asked often. Draw circuit diagrams and output waveforms neatly, build or simulate the circuits you study, and start your project early. Solve previous question papers to spot repeated problem types.
