About Object Oriented Programming (PBCST304)
Object Oriented Programming (PBCST304) is a third-semester course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme, common to CSE and several allied branches. It teaches object-oriented programming in Java: how to design programs around classes and objects, reuse code through inheritance, handle errors safely, and build desktop applications with a graphical interface and a database. It's a project-based course, so students also build a working Java project during the semester.
Syllabus
- Module 1: Java basics: program structure, the JVM, data types, arrays, strings, operators and control statements, plus classes, objects, constructors and access modifiers.
- Module 2: Polymorphism and inheritance: method overloading and overriding, static and final members, inner classes, the super keyword and dynamic method dispatch.
- Module 3: Packages, interfaces and abstract classes, and exception handling with try, catch, throw, throws, finally and custom exceptions.
- Module 4: SOLID principles, Swing GUI programming and event handling, and connecting Java applications to databases using JDBC.
Exam pattern
Because it's a project-based course, internal assessment carries more weight: 60 marks, of which 30 come from the project, plus attendance and two internal exams. The end-semester exam is for 40 marks: 8 short questions of 2 marks each, plus 4 questions of 6 marks each, one from each module.
Study tips
Write and run Java programs yourself for every concept: inheritance, overriding, interfaces and exceptions are much easier to remember once you've coded them. Start your project early, since it's half your internal marks, and solve previous question papers for the written exam.
