About Mathematics for Electrical Science and Physical Science 3 (GYMAT301)
Mathematics for Electrical Science and Physical Science – 3 (GYMAT301) is a third-semester course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme, common to Group B and Group C branches such as ECE, EEE, Civil and Mechanical Engineering. It covers Fourier transforms and complex analysis, tools used in signal processing, circuit analysis, heat flow, fluid flow and electromagnetics.
Syllabus
- Module 1: Fourier integrals and Fourier transforms, including sine and cosine transforms, their properties and engineering applications.
- Module 2: Complex functions: limits, continuity, derivatives, analytic functions, the Cauchy-Riemann equations, harmonic functions and conformal mapping.
- Module 3: Complex integration: line integrals in the complex plane, Cauchy's integral theorem and Cauchy's integral formula.
- Module 4: Taylor and Laurent series, singularities, residues, the residue theorem, and evaluating real integrals using residues.
Exam pattern
The end-semester exam is for 60 marks: 8 short questions of 3 marks each, plus 4 questions of 9 marks each, one from each module. Internal assessment adds 40 marks.
Study tips
Practise problems from every module regularly: checking analyticity with the Cauchy-Riemann equations, finding harmonic conjugates, Fourier transforms of standard functions, and evaluating integrals using residues. Learn the key theorems and formulas well, and solve previous question papers to spot repeated problem types.
