About Introduction to Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering (GCEST104)
Introduction to Mechanical Engineering & Civil Engineering (GCEST104) is a first-semester course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme for Group C branches such as Civil and Mechanical Engineering. It gives a broad introduction to both fields: how engines, refrigerators and machines work, and how buildings are planned and built.
Syllabus
- Module 1: Thermodynamic cycles (Carnot, Otto, Diesel), IC engines, refrigeration and psychrometry.
- Module 2: Pumps and turbines, gears, clutches and bearings, and manufacturing processes: casting, forging, welding, machining, CNC and 3D printing.
- Module 3: Introduction to civil engineering, types and components of buildings, site selection, building area definitions, and building codes such as NBC and KBR.
- Module 4: Construction materials: brick, stone, sand, cement, timber, concrete and its tests, steel, and soil.
Exam pattern
The end-semester exam is for 60 marks: 8 short questions of 3 marks each, plus 4 questions of 9 marks each, one from each module. Internal assessment adds 40 marks.
Study tips
Learn to draw and label the key sketches, such as engine strokes, pumps, the refrigeration cycle and building components. Practise the Carnot efficiency problems, and solve previous question papers to spot repeated topics.
