About Engineering Mechanics (GCEST103)
Engineering Mechanics (GCEST103) is a first-semester course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme for Group C branches such as Civil and Mechanical Engineering. It teaches how forces act on bodies at rest and in motion, the foundation for later subjects like structural analysis, strength of materials and machine design.
Syllabus
- Module 1: Statics: vectors, forces in 2D and 3D, moments and couples, support reactions of beams, free-body diagrams and equilibrium.
- Module 2: Friction (blocks and ladders), centroids of composite areas, and moment of inertia, including the parallel and perpendicular axis theorems.
- Module 3: Dynamics of rectilinear motion: equations of motion, D'Alembert's principle, motion on inclined planes, and connected bodies.
- Module 4: Curvilinear motion and projectiles, and rotation of rigid bodies about a fixed axis.
Exam pattern
The end-semester exam is for 60 marks: 8 short questions of 3 marks each, plus 4 questions of 9 marks each, one from each module. Internal assessment adds 40 marks.
Study tips
Engineering Mechanics is mostly numerical problems, so practise regularly. Always start with a neat free-body diagram, write the equilibrium or motion equations step by step, and solve previous question papers to learn the common problem types.
