About Digital Electronics (GAEST305)
Digital Electronics and Logic Design (GAEST305) is a third-semester course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme, common to all Group A branches such as CSE, IT and AI & DS. It explains how computers work at the level of 0s and 1s: number systems, Boolean algebra, logic gates, and the circuits that add, store and count inside every processor. It also introduces Verilog, a language used to describe and simulate digital hardware.
Syllabus
- Module 1: Number systems and conversions, binary arithmetic, complements, BCD and other codes, and Verilog basics.
- Module 2: Boolean algebra, simplification using Karnaugh maps and the tabulation method, logic gates and universal gates, and modelling gates in Verilog.
- Module 3: Combinational circuits: adders and subtractors, code converters, comparators, decoders, encoders, multiplexers and demultiplexers.
- Module 4: Sequential circuits: flip-flops, registers, synchronous and asynchronous counters, shift registers, ring and Johnson counters, and programmable logic devices.
Exam pattern
The end-semester exam is for 60 marks: 8 short questions of 3 marks each, plus 4 questions of 9 marks each, one from each module. Internal assessment adds 40 marks.
Study tips
Practise number conversions and K-map simplification until they're quick and accurate, since they appear in almost every paper. For circuits, learn to draw truth tables, logic diagrams and timing diagrams neatly, and solve previous question papers to spot repeated design problems.
