About Information Science And Electrical Science (GXCYT122)
Chemistry for Information Science and Electrical Science (GXCYT122) is a first-year course in the KTU B.Tech 2024 scheme, common to Group A and Group B branches such as CSE, IT, ECE and EEE. It's taken in semester 1 or 2 and combines theory with a chemistry lab. The course covers the chemistry behind batteries, electronic materials, lab analysis and the environment.
Syllabus
- Module 1: Electrochemistry and corrosion: electrode potential, the Nernst equation, reference electrodes, Li-ion batteries, fuel cells and corrosion control.
- Module 2: Materials for electronics: nanomaterials, graphene, conducting polymers, OLEDs, dye-sensitized solar cells and supercapacitors.
- Module 3: Spectroscopy and analytical techniques: Beer-Lambert's law, UV-visible and IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis and SEM.
- Module 4: Environmental chemistry: water hardness and treatment, BOD and COD, sewage treatment, e-waste and climate change.
Exam pattern
The end-semester exam is for 60 marks: 8 short questions of 3 marks each, plus 4 questions of 9 marks each, one from each module. Internal assessment, including the lab, adds 40 marks.
Study tips
Practise the numerical problems on the Nernst equation, Beer-Lambert's law and water hardness, and learn the key diagrams. Solve previous question papers to spot repeated topics.
